Many regions of the United States areexperiencing rapid population growth andescalating demands, which put even morestress on water supplies already stretchedthin to meet potable, irrigation, commercial, industrial, and ecosystem preservation uses. Thus, water providers frequently must rely onreclaimed water as an alternative supplysource or use technologies on lower-qualitysource waters to produce potable water, which may generate concentrate wastestreams. Oxidant-laden concentrate wastestreams are difficult and expensive to handle. This study was undertaken to develop andevaluate a novel approach for treating suchwaste streams; the goal was to develop a processthat was as efficient and green as possible. The process described in this article provides asolution to a challenging water treatment problem(i.e., treating high-strength drinking watertreatment residuals) while producing high-qualitywastewater that might be directly usable forreuse applications. This process also improvespublic health by converting to innocuous end-productsoxidants that would otherwise simplybe discharged back into the environment.
