The State of the Industry (SOTI) Report 2008, thefifth installment of AWWA's annual study of issuesconfronting the water industry, provides valuableinsight into the trends and factors influencing waterindustry challenges and creates a framework for settingpriorities and strategies to address these issues. Professionalsfrom all segments of the water communityshared their individual experiences as well as somesuggestions for tackling the challenges ahead.According to the 2008 survey respondents, the topconcerns are source water supply, infrastructure,regulatory issues, workforce needs, and businessfactors. This year's survey results indicate that perceptionof the overall soundness of the industry hascontinued its negative trend; U.S. respondents wereeven less optimistic about the state of the industryfive years down the road. For industry leadership, the2008 SOTI data constitute a call to action forincreased vigilance in the issue areas deemed mostessential and inadequately addressed and the developmentof innovative strategies to resolve theseconcerns.
