Watershed management has been called the "key tothe future" by the US Environmental ProtectionAgency. Watersheds are widely recognized asone of the most effective tools for source water protection.Accordingly, the most recent amendments to theSafe Drinking Water Act mandate states to assess publicwater supply susceptibility to contamination.This article presents the process and results ofMaine's Safe Water Assessment Program. The articleexamines how Maine's assessment process produced aninventory of threats, and it outlines how the statemoved from inventory to action.The information presented in this article can be used asa tool to help small utilities find partners to work withthem on source water protection.
