The objective of this study was to develop a realistic, applicable model in the form of an empirical equation to predict the chloroform concentration derived from chlorination of humic acid in a synthetic water as a function of time, initial total organic carbon (TOC), initial chlorine-to-TOC ratio, reaction temperature, and reaction pH. Experimental methods and results presented in this paper suggest that this model is effective in predicting the chloroform concentration derived from humic acids. Furthermore, although the model is based on chloroform formation in synthetic waters, it should provide a realistic framework that can be modified and adapted to model chloroform formation in natural waters. Application of the model to trihalomethane (THM) precursors other than humic acid is discussed. (Abstract also appears in Spanish) Includes 19 references, tables, figures.
