Hydrants are being flushed on an annual basis starting close to the water treatment plants and working out towards the extremities of the distribution system. Flushing consists of simply opening a hydrant until the discharge flow appears to clear up. An alternate method of hydrant flushing in this project was evaluated in which flushing is carried out by isolating a section of the distribution mains to create conditions of unidirectional flow discharging from a single hydrant while continuously monitoring turbidity and terminating flushing when turbidity reaches 1.0 NTU. Flow from a single direction will increase flushing velocities in the water main. This study was conducted to evaluate the economies of unidirectional flushing and the effects on water quality. The assumption was should the latter method known as unidirectional flushing (UDF) be demonstrated as more cost effective, the City of Edmonton would implement it on a city wide basis.
