The Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) conducted a pilot study in Santa Ana, California, to develop local groundwater resources. Arsenic removal was evaluated simultaneously with natural organic material removal. The pilot study evaluated conventional treatment processes and membrane technology (microfiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis). A flow diagram of the pilot facilities is shown in the paper. The objectives of this research were: Evaluate coagulant dosages required to remove arsenic to meet different levels of future MCLs; Evaluate the effectiveness of combining enhanced coagulation with microfiltration to remove arsenic; and Evaluate the effectiveness of different types of membranes in removing arsenic.
