The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department is engaged in the development of a new water supply in northern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. This facility will draw raw water from Lake Norman and will include an intake structure, and raw and finished water transmission facilities, as well as a new treatment plant. The plant will provide an initial capacity of 18 million gallons per day (mgd) and will be expandable to 108 mgd. This facility will supplement two existing plants that presently supply 120 mgd and are being expanded to 156 mgd. Locating a new raw water intake and water treatment facility offered many opportunities and challenges. One of those was the utility's interaction with the public, particularly with residents near the intake and plant sites. This paper will examine the public information program that was a key element in reducing customers' concerns over a new water supply.
