A 3.0 million gallon per day expansion was designed for an existing 4.0 mgd reverse osmosis, membrane softening water treatment plant. This paper describes both the existing plant control system and the newly designed control system and the design criteria for the modifications. Sequencing of new construction, modification of the existing facilities, and modification of the existing control system are discussed. The considerations for operating a reverse osmosis treatment process are also discussed. The project combined a plant expansion with a process control system upgrade and expansion.
