This paper evaluates the impact of source water quality factors on the application of slow sand filtration (SSF) by examining the results from four recent SSF pilot studies. All four were conducted by communities that, faced with the need to provide filtration of their surface water source, were attempting to determine if slow sand filtration was a possible option. The pilot studies were part of their planning process. Also in each case, the communities actively participated by performing monitoring tasks and operating the pilot filters. Three of the water systems, Kernville-Gleneden Beach-Lincoln Beach (KGL) Water District, Lyons-Mehama Water District, and the City of Reedsport, are located in Oregon. The fourth, Lytton First Nations (Lytton), is located in British Columbia. Pilot studies were conducted for a minimum of 9 months to over 1 year. The testing at KGL was conducted in 1988 and 1989, and a full-scale plant has since been constructed. As of June 1993, the pilot studies at the other three communities were still ongoing.
