In a comparison of a pilot study and a performance test for demineralization, both achieved their objectives. The pilot test provided criteria for the design of the full-scale electrodialysis reversal (EDR) system and indicated that EDR should be less susceptible to fouling and scaling from Lake Texoma water. The performance test verified that the equipment furnished can provide at least the minimum levels of performance required by the contract. Because the performance test verified the design criteria, it can be concluded that the pilot testing yielded results that were representative of the full-scale installation. Many variables can be expected when treating surface water. Identical conditions are impossible to achieve from one period of time to another. Expectations as to the results that can be obtained from pilot testing with surface water should be qualified by the reality of changing conditions. The answer to the question, "Did the pilot study yield results similar to actual operation?" is a qualified "yes." The results were similar, but the variability of water quality makes it difficult to make a direct comparison. Meaningful comparison would not be possible without data normalization. The pilot study did not identify operating problems, but there was a lingering concern about scaling potential, and as a result an antiscalant feed system was installed. Operating experience to date does not provide a sufficient amount of information to evaluate this concern, since the concentrations of sulfate and barium are significantly lower than those of design. Long-term operation under a variety of feedwater conditions will be required to evaluate scaling potential.
