This paper reviews some of the more talked about and used automatic meter reading products today. In general, AMR is almost exclusively a communications function from a technology viewpoint. The three most common AMR systems are telephone-based call outbound, telephone call inbound, and radio. Following each system review, the author comments on what is really needed for the system to be beneficial for residential AMR. In doing so, one must keep in mind that many water utilities break down their distribution and meter reading system into two types of customers, commercial/industrial and residential. An AMR system that provides benefits for one type of water utility customer may not necessarily provide such benefits for the other type.
