Over several decades of intensive effort, the Isatkoak water reservoir in Barrow, Alaska, was converted from a tidal lagoon to a fresh water supply, and an efficient treatment system evolved providing the community with a stable and safe source of drinking water. An in- depth description of the Barrow Utilities & Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BUECI) water treatment system and development of the Isatkoak Reservoir was published in JOURNAL AWWA, March 1987. At that time, BUECI was continuing their efforts to reduce the salinity of the reservoir, toward a goal of eliminating the requirement to desalinate the water with a reverse osmosis system. This paper briefly describes the reservoir and water system developments since 1987.
