By the mid- to late-1980's, many leaking underground tanks had been identified within the Alameda County Water District's service area. This lead to identification of about 300 sites within the District that required some form of remediation. The State's underground tank programs led the nation in identifying problem areas so that cleanups could begin. California's Underground Fuel Tank Regulations served as the basis for national standards later adopted by USEPA.
