The public water board (Ile de France) has entered an arrangement with a private drinking water specialist, Compagnie Generale des Eaux, in the form of a lease-hold operator's contract with a financial interest. The objective is two-fold: safe and good quality supply. Regulating such a treatment train, combining physico-chemical and biological steps is often complicated and difficult. For this reason an expert system has been engineered. Its role is to optimize the conduct of the disinfecting process. It provides decision-making assistance in real time for the operators monitoring the treatment, thanks to a link- up with physico-chemical sensors, while giving useful information for advance treatment decisions based on simulations.
