Several years ago a set of circumstances combined to provide the Seattle Water Dept. with an excellent opportunity to statistically quantify multifamily retrofit savings. Low flow shower heads and faucet aerators were installed and toilet leaks repaired in five Seattle Housing Authority apartments. Another SHA apartment was given a complete toilet retrofit. Residents were surveyed to determine customer satisfaction. Water consumption before and after the retrofit was obtained for each apartment retrofitted, as well as for a control building. The retrofit produced definite reductions in water consumption. However, the impact of the retrofit on water consumption was highly variable from building to building. The study results indicate that a multifamily retrofit program should be highly cost effective, measured either from the point of view of the apartment owner or the water department. Almost three years of consumption data since the retrofit was completed reveal that water savings attributable to toilet repair and retrofit have persisted over time. However, showerhead and faucet aerator savings could not be documented three years after the retrofit.
