There are 39 State Environmental Training Centers in the United States; 31 of them offer courses in drinking water. The training centers fill a variety of roles; some are affiliated with two- and four- year colleges, some centers offer educational technology expertise to support instructional design and development, and other offering training programs at a state center "school" or at locations throughout the state. Many centers participate directly in state certification programs. State centers and AWWA have worked together in training. One recent effort involves AWWA, the state centers, and other organizations to mobilize efforts to meet emerging education and training needs resulting from the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1986. Other AWWA-state center projects include a "train the trainer" program, cross connection control and backflow device testing certification, and an asbestos-cement pipe workshop. All three efforts centered in Washington state. While the state centers and AWWA compete in some areas for students and the services of trainers, there are many areas for cooperation: coordinating training schedules, identification of additional trainers, sharing mailing lists, and so forth.
