Immobilized denitrifying cells via entrapping method were employed to treat groundwater containing 50 mg NO3-N/l. Both calcium-alginate and calcium-aluminum-alginate beads were studied as carriers for denitrifying cells. It was found that these entrapped microbial reactor columns could achieve high levels of nitrate removal provided pH and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio are properly controlled. Calcium concentrations in excess of 100 mg/l in raw water help stabilize the alginate beads. Denitrification columns packed with calcium-aluminum- alginate beads exhibit improved effluent turbidity.
