A discussion of energy use in filter operation must center on the efficiency of the backwash cycle. Energy requirements during the filter service cycle are those uses inherent in the design of the plant and can be considered fixed. These are the requirements to bring the water to the design water level elevation in the filter and to monitor filter operation. This paper is to discusses various methods of backwash and presents an order of magnitude comparison of energy use of the various methods for one style of dual media filter (sand and anthracite).
