The Long Beach Water Department treats up to 25 mgd of colored groundwater using conventional treatment. This paper reports on a pilot plant study that aimed to examine the feasibility of color treatment with ozone in combination with the existing treatment process to obtain a filter effluent color of 10 CU or less; evaluate the impacts of implementing ozone treatment on downstream treatment facilities; evaluate the effectiveness of in-line ozone dissolution and contacting; obtain information regarding the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide/ozone (peroxone) treatment with an in-line system; and evaluate the effect of ozone on the organic content of the water. In addition to the major areas of study, ozone byproducts are discussed. The study showed that ozone can be an effective tool for reducing color either alone or in combination with conventional treatment. In-line dissolution and contacting was found to be efficient.
