This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting a brief overview of the inland reverse osmosis (RO) desalination concentrate disposal issue. The focus of zero liquid discharge (ZLD) research is to develop an economical treatmenttechnique for desalination that minimizesor eliminates any liquid waste dischargefrom a desalination process. Two Water Research Foundation (WRF) Projects are listed, #3010 - Zero LiquidDischarge for Inland Desalination(published 2007); and, #4163 - Zero Liquid DischargeDesalination of Waters with HighOrganic Content (in progress). A schematic of the basic premise is presented, along with removal of sparingly soluble salts, chemical softening, Fluidized Bed Crystallizer (Crystalactor), and activated alumina. Two concentrate treatment technologies are presented: ion exchange, MIEX; and, electrodialysis with ion selective membranes (EDM). A study of Tamiami Groundwater (TGW) treated at the CollierCounty North RegionalWTP is outlined, and results are provided for both MIEX and EDM treatments. Includes tables, figures.
