The raw water source for the Cary/Apex (North Carolina) Water Treatment Plant is Jordan Lake, which has two intake structures in the reservoir: one near the surface (centerline elevation 207 ft) normally used from March until December when the lake is stratified; and, one near the lake bottom (centerline elevation 202 ft) used from early December until March when the lake is completely mixed (i.e. destratified). The normal water level in the lake is 216 ft. In 2002, drought conditions caused water levels in Jordan Lake to decline prompting concerns that the upper intake would begin to draw air and become unusable. Due to the Severity of the most recent drought (2006 to 2008) there are concerns that water levels could drop so significantly to expose the lower intake. The objective of this study was to develop a contingency plan for the treatment of poor quality raw water. The intake was examined to determine upgrades required to provide raw water access to lower lake levels. Treatment facilities were also evaluated to determine upgrades required to adequately treat the poor water quality expected. Bench and pilot scale testing will be performed upon lake stratification to determine any unforeseen difficulties the plant may have in meeting water quality regulations and goals. Further, these testing results will be used to finalize SOPs to manager poor raw water quality events. Includes tables, figures.
