This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the challenges facing public utilities. UCMR 2 new challenges are categorized by the following:the Knowns - resource and financial burdensassociated with monitoring; and,the Unknowns - risk communication, public healthbenefits, and treatment impacts. The possibility of source water protection strategiesas an alternative to contaminant control is presented. Presentation conclusions indicate the following:unregulated contaminant monitoring stretches financialresources for utilities even further; utilities face risk communication challenges if they detectthese contaminants in drinking water supply; we need the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency'shelp in developing common effective publiceducation and communication messages that instillconfidence in us and the process; and, a comprehensive source water protection program couldbe a cost effective method for reducing occurrences anddetections.
