The objectives of this study included: study the performance of electrocoagulation-microfiltration (EC-MF) for virus removal in Lake Houston water (with natural organic matter (NOM), turbidity and other contaminants present);compare the virus removal efficiency of EC-MF in lake water (with NOM) and synthetic water (without NOM); and, compare chemical coagulation-microfiltration (CC-MF) and EC-MF for virus removal. Methods and materials included: test waters, Synthetic water : without NOM DI H<sub>2</sub>O + 3.0 mM NaHCO<sub>3</sub> + 1.0 mM CaCl<sub>2</sub>, pH ~7.5Lake Houston water : with NOM Turbidity = 10-12 NTU; DOC = 4 to 5 mg/L, pH = 7.3 -7.5; MS2 bacteriophage (0.025µm) - indicator virus, Feed MS2 concentration = 10<sup>5</sup> - 10<sup>7</sup> PFU/mL;MS2 propagation and enumeration, USEPA's Information Collection Rule Method ,Host Bacterium - Escherichia coli (ATTC # 15597), Log Reduction Value (LRV) = log (C<sub>F</sub>/C<sub>P</sub>) C<sub>F</sub> - feed MS2 concentration C<sub>P</sub> - effluent MS2 concentration. Conclusions were that: CC-MF with Fe<sup>3+</sup> was effective for both test waters with and without NOM in the 6.3-7.5 pH range;virus removal was attributed to the adsorption of negatively charged virus particles to the positively charged iron species and the subsequent removal of the flocs by MF;EC-MF was effective for synthetic water due to the oxidation of Fe<sup>2+</sup> to Fe<sup>3+</sup> during several hours of continuous mixing and filtration;EC-MF was not effective for virus removal when treating water containing NOM, in spite of providing sufficient time for Fe<sup>2+</sup> oxidation; and,the ineffectiveness of EC is likely due to rapid binding of NOM with Fe<sup>2+</sup> and prevention of Fe<sup>2+</sup> oxidation, hydrolysis, and subsequent sorption of viruses.
