The City of North Miami Beach, Florida is in the process of constructing a new reverse osmosiswater treatment facility and Floridan aquifer wellfield, and a new nanofiltration water treatmentfacility and an expanded Biscayne aquifer wellfield to meet future water demands. The two deepFloridan aquifer wells recently constructed, wells 3F and 4F, had specific capacities of 14 gpm/ftat 1,200 gpm and 11 gpm/ft at 1,800 gpm, respectively. Well 3F had 2,500 gallons of acid(18/20 Baume HCl) injected into the borehole during acidization, which effectively increased thespecific capacity of the well to 47 gpm/ft at 3,200 gpm after development. Well 4F had 5,000gallons of acid injected during acidization, which effectively increased the specific capacity ofthe well to 80 gpm/ft at 3,250 gpm after development. Acidization of wells 3F and 4F increasedtheir specific capacities by greater than 330% and 720%, respectively. The annual energy costsavings from acidization will be about $18,000 for well 3F and $28,000 for well 4F.One of the five shallow Biscayne aquifer wells recently constructed, had significantly lowerspecific capacity than the other four wells. Before acidization the well had a specific capacity of66 gpm/ft at 2,400 gpm. After the addition of 1,000 gallons of acid, the well's specific capacityhad increased to 1,787 gpm/ft at 2,360 gpm after development, a 2700% increase. Theannual energy cost savings from acidization for this well will be about $14,940. The annualenergy cost savings should be compared to the total cost of performing the acidization on thewells to determine how long it will take to pay for the additional work. The energy cost savingswill pay for the additional work performed on these wells in less than two years for all threewells. Acidization of wells should be considered an option to improve productivity and todecrease operating costs for any well completed in a carbonate aquifer or a semi-consolidatedaquifer with calcium carbonate cement.
