The purpose of developing a Cryptosporidium Detection Action Plan was to provide aframework from which to proceed in the event of an elevated Cryptosporidium count in raw orfinished water, or elevated cryptosporidiosis incidence in communities served by San FranciscoPublic Utilities Commission (SFPUC) drinking water. The development and the implementationof the plan was and is a collaborative effort between the water utility (SFPUC) and the SanFrancisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH). The need to develop a formally adopted planhad significance for San Francisco for the following reasons:85% of the water supply originates from highly protected watersheds in the high Sierraand is unfiltered;San Francisco has a relatively high immunocompromised population; and,Cryptosporidium outbreaks in other public water systems have underscored a need to befully prepared with a formal plan for action. Topics covered include: infectivity issues; testing issues; timing issues; background occurrence; and, action levels. Includes 17 references, figures, appendices.
