The purpose of this project was to evaluate the use of strong base anion (SBA)exchange resin for the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from North BayAqueduct (NBA) water. The NBA, part of the State Water Project, is a 27-mileunderground pipeline serving municipal and industrial water users in Napa and Solanocounties. Rapidly changing water quality conditions have historically been a tremendousoperator challenge for utilities treating water from the NBA, particularly in themaintenance of stable coagulation conditions in the treatment process. The use of SBAtechnology has shown considerable promise for significant removal of DOC from rawwater, resulting in reduction of coagulant and disinfectant demands while reducingdisinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. The uniform formation conditions (UFC) testwas used to evaluate the extent of DBP formation during the pilot testing. Includes reference, figures.
