Metcalf & Eddy recently developed a computerized distribution system model for theMetropolitan District Commission (MDC) in Hartford, Connecticut. In order to accountfor the variations in demand, the system was divided into twelve demand zones roughlycorresponding to the pressure zones with larger zones subdivided based on additionalgeographical factors. Large users and un-metered usage were considered separately. Eachdemand zone was characterized by a unique demand pattern and seasonal multiplier. Asystem-wide water budget was utilized to aid calibration and track total hourly demands ineach demand zone while maintaining the overall system demand.Utilizing this model, M&E conducted a thorough analysis of the MDC's system anddeveloped a program of improvements to address system deficiencies.
