Despite growing pressures on water suppliers from drought, water shortages, and other challenges, the North Americanwater industry has been slow to implement reliable andconsistent water supply auditing and loss control. AWWA'sTechnical and Educational Council funded a survey that confirmedthat US water loss reporting practices are limited and vary widely. In 2000, an International Water Association task force, withAWWA participation, assembled a water audit methodology asa best management practice (BMP) that is applicable to watersuppliers worldwide, providing a framework to tabulate supplierwater use and loss. Additionally, effective leakage managementmethods have been advanced with great success. This paperadvocates the use of the international water audit method andwater and revenue loss control technologies that offer NorthAmerican water utilities an outstanding water resource recoveryopportunity and a great stride toward sustainability. Includes 26 references.
