With the rapidly expanding application of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF), thedisposal of treatment residuals has created new problems and challenges. The types of residualsand their characteristics depend upon the design and operation of the MF/UF, and the quality ofthe water being treated. The feasible disposal options are regulated by a number ofenvironmental regulations. If no coagulants are used, a wider range of disposal options shouldbe available to MF/UF facilities. This paper summarizes the characteristics of MF/UF residuals, the regulatory situation concerning their handling and disposal, and the current practices fortreatment and disposal of the residuals. Includes 8 references, tables, figures.
