The Louisville Water Company's (LWC) 60-million gallon per day (MGD) B.E. Payne Plant(Payne Plant) is a conventional surface water treatment plant drawing its primary supplyfrom the Ohio River. In 1999, LWC started operation of a 15-MGD horizontal collector wellat the Payne Plant that provides bank-filtered water from the alluvial deposits adjacent to theOhio River. LWC is currently in the process of implementing a second phase of riverbankfiltration (RBF) that will provide an additional 45 MGD of RBF capacity at the Payne Plant.With the implementation of additional RBF capacity, the current design project needed toprovide a treatment plant with flexibility to treat two very different source waters. This paperaddresses the water quality challenges of the two different sources so that the Payne Plantcould be used to treat 100% RBF water, 100% Ohio River water, or any combination of thetwo sources. Since the existing process treats the Ohio River source well, most of the workpresented here involves evaluation of process modifications needed for RBF water. Includes tables, figures.
