As a consequence of regulatory requirements and enforcement, most water companieshave made significant changes to their operational management processes with tighter riskassessment procedures and increased staff training in order to reduce the incidents ofdiscoloration events. However, these measures are often applied uniformly company widewithout taking into account the underlying vulnerability of an area. This paper describes thebackground to discoloration incidents in the United Kingdom (UK) and their causes and presents a risk assessmentmethod that can be used to target remedial measures cost-effectively. The paper is based onresearch that is currently being undertaken for UK Water Industry Research Ltd (UKWIR)entitled "Managing and Controlling Discoloration Incidents" and builds on work previouslypublished in the UKWIR report "Hydraulic Characterization of Deposits and Review of SedimentModelling". Includes 6 references, table, figure.
