Studies with dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) trichloroethylene (TCE) bypermanganate ion (MnO4-)were conducted to determine the removal rate of DNAPLTCE using a batch technique. The study focused on understanding the fundamentalmechanisms of oxidative removal and developing mathematical models of theprocesses capable of simulating DNAPL TCE degradation by permanganate oxidationat tested conditions. Dissolution of DNAPL TCE into the aqueous phase and TCEoxidation by MnO4- in the aqueous phase were considered as main processes affectingthe degradation of DNAPL TCE in the system for modeling purposes. It was provedexperimentally and theoretically that the interface mass transfer of TCE wasdramatically enhanced due to the TCE oxidation reaction occurring in the aqueousphase in the presence of MnO4-.The existence of MnO4-in the aqueous phase plays animportant role in enhancing the DNAPL TCE degradation. The model successfullyrepresented the experimental system under the tested conditions. Includes 6 references, figures.
