Cluster gravity filters have been used in drinking water applications for more than threedecades. A recent innovative advancement in the influent flow-splitting arrangement canreduce the total filtration headloss by as much as 60 inches (1.5 meters) withoutsacrificing solids capture capability. A decrease in the operating headloss, in turn, reduces the amount of energy used by the system. In addition, cluster filters feature theability to provide backwash water from in-service filter cells, thus eliminating or greatlyreducing the backwash pumping requirement associated with power costs. These twoimportant design features also require less maintenance. Includes figures.
