During the spring of 2001, the City of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, was subjected to anoutbreak of gastrointestinal illness attributed to cryptosporidiosis. It was estimated that 5800 -7100 people from the immediate area and a substantial number of visitors were affected. Theoutbreak was attributed to be waterborne.North Battleford has both a groundwater and a surface water system. The surface treatmentfacility developed a major problem in March 2001 with the coagulation/flocculation/clarification process unit, and it was believed this was a major factor for probable entry of theparasite.A boil water order was imposed for a 13 week period. The provincial government called fora judicial inquiry into the matter. The report of the inquiry is due by the end of March 2002.This paper reviews the North Battleford system, the outbreak, and the attendantcircumstances. Measures and issues associated with the boil water period are describedas well as the improvements that have been implemented or are pending. Includes 5 references, figures.
