Lack of electrical power, steep terrain, unskilled manpower and space constraint were some of the Himalayan hurdles faced in the proposed augmentation of the existing water treatment facility at Gangtok, India from 3.0 mgd to 7.5 mgd. Nature has benignly bestowed an ever-reliable gravity flow to partially offset this imbalance. The elevation difference between the inlet works and pure water sump of the existing plant itself was more than 50 feet. The excess head available was proposed for use in achieving completeness of the unit processes. The mechanical component was kept at a bare minimum. Retrofitting some of the existing units along with minimum possible new construction solved the issue of space. The innovations considered for implementation have possibly led to an appropriate and sustainable solution under the circumstances, thus ensuring safe water quality for this utility, while also providing a cost effective solution.
