  • Three New Arsenic Removal Technologies: How to Design Them and How Much They Will Cost

Three new technologies, advanced ion-exchange operations with indefinite brine recycling (AIXO-IBR), microsand assisted oxidation adsorption (MAOA), and coagulation-assisted ceramic filtration (CCF), were pilot tested for arsenic removal capabilities in Scottsdale, Arizona; Tucson, Arizona; and Billings, Montana. Preliminary design parameters and cost curves were developed based on the results of the year-long testing. In general, the capital cost of these three technologies ranges from $500,000 to $1,200,000 for a one million gallon per day (mgd) facility, excluding building and land costs, with annual operations and maintenance (O&M) costs being $75,000 to $200,000. Capital and O&M costs were proportional to system complexity, with the MAOA and CCF processes being more economical than an AIXO-IBR system. Possible additional savings realized by co-removal of other contaminants were not considered in this study. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
