The Arsenic Rule promulgated in January 2001 will primarily affect small drinking water systems. However, many of the Best Available Technologies listed in the Arsenic Rule are not applicable for these small systems. Recent developments in ion exchange processes and specialized sorbents offer promise to these small utilities for simple and cost effective arsenic treatment processes. These disposable iron and aluminum based sorbents operate well over the pH range of natural waters, minimized the material handling concerns for small utilities, and are relatively simple to operate. Includes 22 references, tables, figures.
