In October 1999, the AWWA Engineering and Computer Applications Committee (ECAC) commissioned a survey on Water Network Modeling practices. The objectives of the survey were threefold: to provide up to date information for the revision ofAWWA's Manual of Water Supply Practices, Distribution Network Analysis for Water Utilities (32); to gauge the current level of interest and activity in using computers to model water distribution systems, including the behavior of water quality, and identify potential trends; and, to identify and share with AWWA members some interesting and possibly innovative applications of water quality modeling in distribution systems. The survey was distributed to 989 utilities in Canada and the United States. Utilities were selected via a review of AWWA's databases to select utilites serving populations greater than 35,000 people. 174 utilities responded, which represents an 18 percent return rate. This report presents the results of the survey. Topics covered include: average day demand; source water information; distribution system information; pressure zones; service pressures; secondary disinfectants; water quality problems; hydraulic modeling; sources of model information; calibration information; and, tank and reservoir modeling. Includes tables, figures.
